Car Prices

How much should you spend?

Once you've chosen the type of vehicle you want, you need to start looking for the best deal. Whether you're looking to buy or lease, you'll probably run into a wide range of prices for vehicles that seem to be pretty much the same.

When comparison shopping for new vehicle prices, the key is to make sure you are actually looking at two comparable vehicles - when it comes to cars, a number of little differences can have a big impact on the price tag.

For example, the difference between a vehicle with air conditioning and one without can be thousands of dollars. The same is true for the slightest of options, such as tinted windows, interior materials and color.

If there's an option that you absolutely have to have on your new vehicle, make sure you account for it in your price range - if you're not willing to put in the extra money, expect just the basics.

Paying For It

When you're comparing prices, you also have to look at your financing options. Two cars with the same sticker price can end up differing by thousands of dollars when you work in factors such as financing or leasing fees.

If you've saved up and you're purchasing a new vehicle with cash, you won't have to worry about any hidden or unexpected fees or charges - but the fact is, most people won't find themselves in that situation. In this case, remember to take into consideration costs such as:

  • Down payments
  • Interest rates
  • Financing or leasing fees
  • Monthly payments
  • Charges for early re-payment of the loan

Once you work in any additional charges you're going to incur for your payment options, you may find a significant difference in the total amount you're paying for your new vehicle.

Again, remember to compare your new vehicle choices by total price, working in any additional financing charges. While sticker prices may be similar, it's the additional costs that make a big difference in what you actually pay.
