Car Rentals

Getting a temporary ride

Some people rent because they only have a short term need for a vehicle, such as for a couple days or weeks. Others rent because their own vehicle is out of commission or they're looking for something a little fancier to drive to a particular event. You can also find exotic car rentals that allow you to take your dream vehicle for a spin.

Rental car agencies are often tied to other travel companies, such as airports or hotels, in order to provide you with transportation when you're away from home.

Questions to Ask

When you rent a car, you're entering a contract. Although it's a short-term agreement, you have to consider it as similar to a vehicle lease. Before you commit, you should ask:

  • Are there hidden fees? For the most part, rental charges are fairly reasonable. Unless you're looking for an exotic or luxury rental, you can get a car for anywhere from $25 to $50 a day. However, you have to make sure that you're not going to be responsible for additional fees, or you might find yourself with a bigger bill than expected. There may be surcharges or fees for drop off, insurance, fuel, mileage, equipment rental and cleaning.
  • Who can drive the vehicle? Some rental agencies have limitations on who is eligible to drive their vehicles. Specifically, there may be fees associated with age and driver history for each candidate. Before you arrive, make sure you and anyone else who will drive is eligible, in order to avoid surprises.
  • Is additional insurance required? Most rental agencies have all their vehicles insured under a standard policy, and will offer you additional insurance for instances of damage or extra mileage. Check to see what the basic insurance covers before you decline the additional options. You can also see if your own insurance company can offer coverage, which may be cheaper than what the agency is offering.
  • Is there a deposit required? Some rental agencies require a cash deposit, or the registry of a credit card number. These charges ensure that the agency can get easy compensation for any damage you do to the vehicle. Check to see what type of fees you need to pay before you arrive, so that you're well prepared.
  • Are there refueling or maintenance policies? Some rental agencies require you to return their vehicles with a full tank of gas. Others expect that you will have the car cleaned before you bring it back. If you're renting for a significant period of time, such as a month or longer, you may be responsible for maintenance such as oil changes. Be aware of your responsibilities to avoid hidden end-of-contract fees and charges.
