Sports Car

How to finally get into your dream ride

By Carol Morgan

There are many inner-movie stars wondering from time to time what it would be like to be behind the wheel of some of those beautiful sports cars you see ripping around. You need to take your time when you’re shopping around because even modern sports cars don't have many of the things in a car we have expect-surprisingly few cup holders to say the least.

Don’t commit

Starting all the way at the free end of things, you might consider a test drive, or be honest with a friend of yours that has one. He would probably flattered to have secured what you can only salivate over! My sister borrowed a convertible sports car when she toured the parade and waved to the crowd – it’s a very snazzy AND thrifty way to do things.

There are more serious options also. You might consider various rentals: daily if it were to be for a special reunion, or monthly for a special summer on the road.

Take the plunge

If this limited amount of exposure only whets your appetite rather than quenches it, you may want to spend some time thinking of non traditional ownership.

Non traditional financing has a bit of a bad rap right now and chances are you'll hear about the options if you are interested enough. There are ways to split the ownership burdens between multiple aficionados.

If there is a place you visit yearly like Hawaii or Jackson Hole, why not consider going in on a sports car co-op with some of the people who own the condos you stay in? Any of the issues would have certainly been worked out by now after all the time share sales, but this actually makes a lot more sense than a vacation home timeshare.

There are fewer car hire options for vacationers and it would be a welcome edition to the basic sleazy rental garage you wait through no matter how nice the car you rent. If you would like it to be mobile and there are several like-minded among your circle, you could form your own roaming time share. Be sure to include plenty from each for the detailing no one will want to do and the insurance premium and insurance!

Make it your own

If there is no other option than to buy that cherry car yourself, do consider it, but thoroughly familiarize yourself with all the hidden costs such as gas, insurance, and maintenance, as well as the costs of having another daily driver in order to keep your sports car pristine.
