The old Volkswagen Passat was given a complete overhaul in 2006, and the result was a larger Passat with an Audi-like appearance, including a finely chiseled exterior and a more-than-roomy interior. AutoPacific Inc. ranked the 2006 Passat as the top vehicle for the Premium Mid-Size Car category in their 2006 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards. Owners noted highlights like its classy interior design and European driving dynamics in their satisfaction ratings.

The base model 2006 Passat features the all new 2.0T FSI turbo four cylinder engine that delivers 200 horsepower. However, if you're looking for something more powerful that will put you in the rank of the Acura TL, the 3.6 Liter V6 engine cranks out 280 horsepower. This beefier Passat provides an excellent ride with superior handling at any speed.
Base models are affordable, but a fully equipped V6 Passat will come close to $40,000 - and it doesn't have a favorable trade-in value, either. Volkswagen has been hit hard lately by bad quality reviews. This is surprising, considering the Passat is so highly regarded by the auto industry. In the end, your best bet is to stick to a moderately equipped model for a lower price.
The 2006 Passat also won a "Double Best Pick" for exceptional safety performance from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The car earned the top rating in all the categories, including structural design and head protection. It also got a 5-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash test.
