Chrysler Car

Troubling times for the Chrysler car - Can they pull through?

With Chrysler experiencing poor car sales, the company recently merged with Mercedes-Benz to form Daimler-Chrysler. Fans of the Chrysler Corporation are split between whether the company is doing better since the merger or if it's just dead. While other automakers such as Toyota, Honda and General Motors are soaring ahead, Chrysler is struggling to keep up.

Fuel efficiency sells

The Chrysler Group experienced an increase in sales in June 2007 due to its new "Maximize Your Miles" program. The company recently launched its new lineup of fuel-efficient models which received strong consumer interest. With rising gas prices, people want fuel-efficient cars, not gas-guzzling SUVS - which is finally some good news for Chrysler.

The new car models have been so well-received that the company reports a 55 percent increase in car sales since last year. The new fuel-efficient models that have experienced increased sales include the Chrysler 300, the Chrysler Sebring sedan and Sebring convertible, the Dodge Caliber, the Dodge Avenger and the Dodge Charger. The PT Cruiser and PT Cruiser convertible are still in the lineup as entry-level vehicles, and the Crossfire serves as an affordable sports car. Chrysler has also attempted to lower its prices to spark further consumer interest.

The Chrysler Sebring is sporting a new look

The 2007 Sebring is greatly welcomed by automotive enthusiasts because it marks a departure from the bland styling of the previous models. Now atop its own distinct platform, the Sebring sports the grill and headlights of the 300M, the windshield of the 300C and the hood ribs of the Crossfire. While the design features aren't new for Chrysler, when put together they create a completely redesigned Sebring.

The interior is packed with luxury features such as a voice-activated GPS navigational system, heated seats and cup-holders that can chill or heat your drink. It was also designed with practicality in mind, which is something that the Sebring lacked in the past. It has a flat-folding front passenger seat and a split flat-folding rear seat for additional cargo space. For those that like the wind in their hair, Chrysler still has the Sebring convertible.

One of the best things about the new Sebring is its friendlier price tag of $18,995, making it comparable to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

Specifications for the 2007 Sebring:

  • Engines: 2.4L inline-4; 2.7L flex-fuel V6; 3.5L V6
  • Power: 172 HP and 165 lb-ft of torque; 190 HP and 190lb-ft of torque; 235 HP and 232 lb-ft of torque

I saw one of these in a local parking lot and it looked really cool. But I would have to wonder about the safety of the vehicle, especially compared to an average sized car or a 4x4. It did look every bit "like a car" as the others in the lot, and if everyone drove one eventually, how much better our fuel economy and emmisions testing would be. I say full steam ahead!!
