Mustang

The great American muscle car

If you're going to own a Ford, then it better be a Mustang. While Ford vehicles have been given a bad reputation time and time again, the Mustang is the one vehicle that has been able to stand the test of time. It's known for delivering high quality performance and aggressive good looks.

Mustang: The brand

The original pony car began its long life in 1964, when Ford needed a brand new car to compete with Chevrolet's Corvair Monza. The Mustang was an affordable car made for people of any class, and Americans experienced an undeniable attraction which is still evident in the Mustangs today. At the time, the standard car cost about $2,400. Ford sold more than 22,000 Mustangs on its first day and 418,000 in its first year of production - the popularity of the Mustang was almost immediate.

1965 brought some new changes to the Mustang, among them the new Fastback model. The other was the introduction of the GT. The Mustang also found success on the race track with the Shelby GT-350. For many, the style of the Mustang in the 1960s was a favorite, especially since that was the decade of the Shelby - the V8 engines are highly desired over the weaker V6.

In the early 70s, the Mustang was given a larger, more aggressive-looking design. Some of the new models included the Grande, the Mach 1, the Boss 302 and the Boss 429.

The Mustangs manufactured between the years of 1974 and 1993 are generally not considered the greatest. Produced in the "Dark Ages" of automotive performance, these cars had small engines, little power and not-so-special designs. But in 1994, the Mustang took off again delivering higher performance and sexy, modern styling. In 2005, we saw the introduction of the retro-looking 'Stang - the styling may have taken a bit of getting used to, but they remain the most powerful Mustangs to date.

Value has always been one of Mustang's strong points. For just $20,000, you can get yourself a Mustang Coupe with a V6 engine, delivering 200+ horsepower. But for just $5000 more you can get a powerful GT with 300+ horsepower, which is hard to turn down.

The king of the road

Check out this new pony! The new Ford Shelby GT500 has to be the most powerful factory-built Mustang in existence. With a supercharged 5.4 liter V8 engine, the Shelby delivers a roaring 500 horses. With racing-inspired performance and handling, this modern muscle car was built with the safety and comfort of today's technology.

The first Shelbys were produced in the late 1960s by performance legend Carroll Shelby - who has reunited with Ford Mustang to create this legendary new sports car. The original Ford Shelby was sold between 1965 and 1970, and featured a big block 428 cubic inch "Cobra Jet" V8 engine, making it one of the most powerful muscle cars of that time.

To mark this special reunion, the GT500 features SVT and Shelby Cobra badges. Just like the original Shelby, the GT500 is available as a coupe or convertible. It marks a new era in Ford's high-performance future, and also reflects an exciting part of the company's history - so don't miss your chance to get in on the action!

I have a 1995 Mustang Cobra SVT. When I am driving it, it runs great, but when I park it and return and start it up, the engine races and then stalls out. I have to keep my foot on the accelerator to keep the engine running for several minutes until the engines maintains a steady idle. This happens every time I take the car out. Needless to say this has become rather un nerving. ANy help would be appreciated.
