Car Donations

Making a difference one car at a time

If you're thinking about trading in your used vehicle, why not donate it instead? Your donation could make a huge difference as a charitable contribution. You'll feel good knowing that your gift will help someone in need.

Most car donation charity centers will quickly and conveniently pick up your vehicle donation, free of charge. They accept almost all kinds of cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, boats and RVs. They don't even have to be in running condition (however, their value does have to make up for the cost of the towing).

Many car donations are also tax deductible, as long as they are donated to a non-profit charitable organization. They also have to have a minimum estimated value of $500.

How to donate a used car

Donateacar.com and Cars4charities.org are great places to start looking for trustworthy, charitable organizations. Examples of trusted charities that take car donations include the United Way, Cancer Research Institute, American Diabetes Association, American Red Cross, SPCA and Kars-4-Kids. Once you choose a charity, you're ready to make a donation.

To see if your vehicle qualifies for donation, simply fill out the online donation form with your vehicle information, including the make, model, year, VIN, plate number and a description of any damage and whether or not it's drivable. If your vehicle qualifies, the charity will immediately send out a certified tow truck operator to pick it up. Upon pickup, you will also receive your tax receipt.

Wonder what happens to your used cars? Most charities will clean up and resell the vehicles, and the profit will support their causes, such as cancer research, new hospital equipment or helping disadvantaged families.

Vehicle Recycling

Automobiles are among the top recyclable items. The automotive recycling industry dedicates itself to the ecological disposal of broken or abandoned motor vehicles. They deal with the removal and recycling of old buses, trucks, motorcycles, RVs, snowmobiles and farm equipment. They disassemble the vehicles for parts that can be recycled and used in resale.

Facts about old vehicles:

  • 70% of the content on the average car is recycled.
  • Recycling and reusing old vehicles conserves energy.
  • Old parts can be refurbished and sold as low as 50% off the price of new parts.
  • Recycling reduces environmental contamination.
  • The reuse and recycling of vehicles creates job opportunities.
