Super Bikes! is a television show airing on the SPEED Channel Wednesdays at 8 pm EST. SPEED was the first channel devoted entirely to motorsports. When the channel first started they had a definite slant towards auto racing, and they still have a large number of auto shows, but are branching out into other areas as well.
Super Bikes! takes viewers on a thrill ride through the world of sport bikes. In any given episode the show features the hottest people and places associated with sport bikes. The show showcases the hottest spots, places, and events for sport bike enthusiasts. Anywhere that has sport bikes, or a gathering of people who love the sport, Super Bikes! will be there, from the back roads to the urban streets.
Jason Britton, a professional stunt bike rider, and Rossi Morreale host the show and do a pretty adequate job of hosting. You can tell that Britton loves the bikes and that he loves what he's doing, but sometimes he seems to think it’s all a little funny, and he sometimes acts like he doesn't take things seriously enough. Then again it might just be that he's having a lot of fun too! Morreale is the actual host, while Britton is credited as a "field correspondent", which means that he goes out to the places they highlight and does the riding on the show.
Super Bikes! began airing in July, and so far seems to have a fairly good following. The show is geared towards young men who love sport bikes, but they're already gaining a following with other groups. Some younger women who are interested in thrill sports, and older guys who love the bikes are watching the show.
As a diehard race fan, I have to say that this show isn't for me. The show is still struggling to find its feet, and I can only hope that they do so sooner rather than later. Everyone they highlight on the show seems to find everything "cool", "wicked", or "awesome", and it tends to make the whole world of sport bikes look ridiculous and immature. Take for instance the episode where the bike club kept talking about how cool it was that a street fight broke out at an event.
Another downside to the show is the abundance of commercial breaks. In one 30 minute long episode, they had five commercial breaks that clock in at 12 minutes total, given us only 18 minutes of action. It’s basically a really long infomercial with a few stunts shown in to keep you from realizing the truth.
All in all, unless they change the format and a few other things, I won't be tuning in again.
