Car Organizer

Quick and easy tips

By Natasha L. Kohlhoff Polak

It's easy for a car to become a garbage pit, if you don't take the time to organize it on a regular basis! Since a car is a huge extension of who you are, you tend to put most of your everyday possessions in it. So it stands to reason that the car is no different when it comes to organization.

Here are some helpful tips:

  • Keep a trash bag handy. Using a small plastic bag, an actual trash bag, or even an old tote bag works well for this purpose. The point is, when you have trash that you can't dispose of right away while you're in the car, use the bag. I like keeping mine behind the driver's seat, so it's out of my way and it's not on the floor. At the end of the day (or at a time when you are able to dump the trash), unload and dispose in a trash receptacle or reuse for the next time.
  • Leave space in the trunk. Of course, you want to have room for essentials-like a spare tire, car jack, wrench, blanket, flash light, and an emergency kit. But refrain from dumping what you hardly use but have no other place for in the trunk. In fact, the best thing you can do is to inspect it for junk each season, to make sure you only have what you need there, and the rest is either stored at home or pitched. If you haul your shopping goods in there, buy a trunk organizer so everything can fit in without falling over or smashing.
  • Use the glove box wisely. Have a little zippered pouch for your car registration and no more than a handful of documents you find necessary to keep with you on your travels to store in the glove compartment.
  • Do an inventory. At the end of the day, take a look around you before getting out of the car. This is the time to remove the trash, take your shopping goods inside, and remove clutter from the seats. Doing this regularly will help you stay organized and clutter free without a doubt each day.
  • Vacuum and clean surfaces once a month. Some people might need to vacuum more frequently, depending on what the car is used for, but you can do a swipe here or there with an Armor All wipe or damp paper towel at the end of the day without taking up too much of your time. While you're at it, replace air fresheners as needed, and now you're all set.
