The latest gadgets for your ride
Car customization is not just about pimping out its exterior. The interior needs attention as well, and aftermarket car electronics are part of the package. Check out some of the most popular electronic upgrades available for your ride - but remember, some of these products should only be used when the vehicle is in park!
- Stereo systems - This is the first step in any customization. Car enthusiasts like to be heard, and what better way to do that than installing a massive stereo system? Single-disc CD players, mp3 players, multiple-disc CD changers and players with built-in monitors are just some of the available options. And what's a new stereo without some high-end speakers? The more speakers, the louder the sound, and many enthusiasts will install a subwoofer for extreme bass.
- GPS navigational systems - A GPS system is a helpful electronic upgrade for travel purposes. You'll never get lost again with a navigational system at your side. These portable, full-screen units offer maps, directions and points of interest to help travelers reach their destinations. Many of the systems are quite intelligent, providing traffic information, alternative routes and voice directions.
- LCD monitors - Monitors have always been big in auto customization. They're used for watching movies or television, displaying navigational systems or playing video games. LCD monitors can be installed in the dashboard, on the ceiling or even in the backs of headrests. They're the perfect addition to the family minivan, keeping the kids occupied during long trips. An exciting new monitor called "Dual View" allows the driver on the left to see a different image than the passenger on the right. For instance, the driver can use the GPS system while the passenger watches a movie.
- DVD players - DVD players are becoming more popular in vehicle accessories as more manufacturers are offering them as an available option. If your vehicle doesn't come with one upon purchase, you can always install an aftermarket product. Some DVD players can be installed in the dash with a built-in monitor; in other cases, the DVD player and monitor are sold separately.
- Game consoles - While you don't see this too often, some people actually install game consoles such as PlayStation, Xbox or Wii into their vehicles. Typically, they're installed in hatchbacks or SUVs that have a lot of space in the trunk for a large monitor and game system. The audio output can be hooked up to the car's stereo system.
- Computers - For the businessperson on the go, a mobile computer will prove to be a useful accessory. Mobile PCs are light and compact, making them perfect for doing work on the go. Don't let its mighty size fool you - the mobile PC can come with various processors (Pentium 3 or 4, Intel Celeron) and supports several Microsoft Windows operating systems. A PC monitor is another option for your vehicle.
