Radar Detector

Tips for buying

By Aparna Guru

A radar detector is a useful device which alerts drivers of speed traps by getting signals from the other radar in the vicinity.

Laser Detectors or Lidar is more advanced and efficient than Radio Detectors. While a Radio Detector depends on change of frequency and wavelength pattern (Doppler shift) of radio waves to calculate the approximate speed of the vehicle, the Lidar can give an accurate result by relying on the reflections of light injected by a laser speed gun. In less than half a second a Laser Detector can accept thousand samples of the reflected infrared light and can calculate the exact speed of a moving vehicle through some complex mathematical calculations.

The latest Radar/Laser Detectors make the best of both the technology and have the potential to catch a variety of radar bands and laser formats present in a larger area. While choosing a radar detector, the accessibility of different features should be the matter of concern. They are:

  • 360 degrees radar alert, which means your Radar Detector can grasp the radar signals through the sides, front and rear of your car.
  • Detection of popular radar signals like Ka, Ku, K, X etc.
  • Should be invisible to signals like VG-2, which is used by police in many countries where Radar Detectors are illegal.
  • The POP mode, a radar signal which can be reflected back in 1/10th of a second after being shot by the radar gun. The receivers in targeted detectors can not get a clue of the signal because it is very fast in its action.
  • Strobe alert, which can inform you about the approach of an emergency vehicle like a fire truck.
  • Safety alert to look for the road hazards in areas using the same technology.
  • Voice alert is used when you want audible messages and alerts and verbally it will tell you which radar band is being picked.
  • Laser detection technology that uses many laser sensors to get a clear idea about lidar bands in a wider area.
  • GPS system in a detector tells you about false alert location.
  • Cordless radar for more convenient use, but they do not offer protection from POP radar.
  • Signal strength indicator provides you with the knowledge and quality of signal. You can watch the signal strength in a Display panel and can receive a visual alert. Audio alert only mode disables visual alert and signal strength indicator.
  • Jammers can be used to elude the other detectors. They create their own signals and mix it up with the transmitted signals, which give unclear information about the position of your vehicle. Radio jammers are for the Radio Detectors and Laser jammers are for the Lidar.

Generally, the standard Radar Detectors are used for a greater distance and Laser Detectors to know about the closeness of a speeding car. The modern detectors using both the technology of radio waves and infrared cost more than the basic Radar Detector. Many of these can be upgraded keeping in tune with latest bands and functions, which will be relatively more efficient.
