Auto Body Repair

How to choose a shop

By Molly Carter

Choosing an auto body repair shop can seem overwhelming. Everyone has had a bad experience with a "dirty mechanic" and it seems most people are reluctant to trust the guidance of a new mechanic. Here are a few tips for finding an auto body shop that will repair your car in a timely and efficient manner for a reasonable price.

  • Get a referral. Ask friends and family for a trustworthy mechanic that they have frequented for years. Although some mechanics are out for a quick buck and may over quote you or provide shoddy service, a good mechanic will try and build a lifetime relationship with their clients. Chances are if your friend has gone for them for twenty years, they offer reliable service.
  • Get a quote. Ask your potential mechanic for a quote. Most mechanics will provide this service free of charge. If it seems unrealistic, get a quote at another shop or look online for an estimate. Countless websites exist detailing parts and estimated repair costs.
  • Find an auto body repair shop specific for your needs. Some shops focus on import cars where as others do a lot of repairs on Fords or Chevrolets. If you go to a shop specializing on your make, chances are they will have your parts in stock. The mechanic will be more knowledgeable about your specific make and model.
  • Trust your gut. If the mechanic makes you uncomfortable or you don't trust what he is telling you bring your business elsewhere. There are a lot of other mechanics out there vying for your business.
  • Find a mechanic that will have your car repaired in a timely manner. Most mechanics will offer you an estimate of how long the repairs should take. Ask how often they run past their estimated time allotments. Ask if they run past their estimation if they will provide you with a rental car.
  • Will they stand by their work? If anything is faulty, will they make the necessary adjustments? How long do they guarantee their work will last? If they don't repair something correctly and it leads to further damage, will they correct whatever goes wrong?
  • Sign a contract upfront requiring that they call you if repairs will cost more than their initial assessment. There is nothing worse than having them complete the work and realizing that you owe them double what they originally estimated.

Choosing a reputable mechanic is important. By doing your research, being upfront about your expectations, and having general knowledge about your car, you will find an auto body shop you will frequent for years.
