Classic Car Repair

Tips for working on a classic car

There is no greater feeling than restoring your vintage car to its former beauty. However, working on a classic car is unlike working on a newer model. Vintage mechanical systems are different, and original parts are more expensive and hard to find. To ensure that you're taking proper care of your classic car, here are some repair tips:

  • Make space - Repairing and restoring a classic car is a time-consuming project. Make sure you have enough space to store the car and parts. You'll likely need a separate garage specifically for your vintage car. A heated garage is best because you can work on your car all year long.
  • Finding parts - Finding replacement parts for your classic car can sometimes be difficult. Knowing where to look is the secret. Parts catalogs can be purchased for your specific vehicle. The catalog will list all the original replacement parts for your vehicle. Swap-meets, either in person or online, are also great places to buy or sell classic car parts.
  • Use original parts - When possible, only use original parts for your classic car - old mirrors, hood ornaments and original radios, for example. This will enhance the value and selling price of your car. A vintage car with all original parts is extremely desired among classic car buffs.
  • The right equipment - If you're doing work on the transmission, engine, driveshaft or radiator, you may need an engine hoist to help you get these parts back into the car. If you're doing bodywork, underbody repairs or working on the wheels, then you'll also need a reliable jack to elevate the vehicle.
  • Expect difficulties - If you're planning on doing the repairs yourself, expect the unexpected. Repair procedures for vintage cars are going to be different than modern vehicles, and some may be more difficult than you anticipated. If you find that a certain task is too complicated or feel that you'll risk damaging the vehicle, then call for professional help.
  • Choosing a mechanic - Should you need professional help restoring your classic car, you'll need to locate a reliable mechanic. Find one that specializes in working with classic autos, and if possible, one who has experience with your specific vehicle make and model. You'll rest easy knowing that your car is in the hands of an antique auto professional.
