Tips for proper motorcycle engine maintenance

Properly maintaining your motorcycle will keep the engine in top running condition for years to come. Most basic engine checks can be carried out by the rider, however more complicated maintenance procedures should be completed under the guidance of a qualified technician for safety. The technician will have knowledge of the proper maintenance for different types of motorcycle engines.

Daily maintenance

Here are some tips for basic motorcycle engine maintenance:

  • Carburetor - Keep the carburetor clean. Every 1000 miles, clean the carburetor float chamber and related parts.
  • Coolant - Maintain coolant levels and check for leaks. Frequently change the coolant to get rid of grunge and prevent the engine from overheating.
  • Engine oil - Start the engine and let it idle for 3 minutes. Stop the engine and then wait 3 more minutes. Remove the dipstick and wipe off the oil. Reinsert the dipstick to examine the oil levels and top off if low. You should also change the oil every 3 months or 3000 miles.
  • Drive chain - Turn the ignition switch off and switch the transmission into neutral. Inspect the slack in the driver chain and sprockets for wear or looseness. Lubricate or replace if necessary.
  • Throttle operation - Test for smooth throttle grip in all steering positions. Lubricate the throttle cable if needed.
  • Spark plugs - Change the spark plugs every couple of years.
  • Battery - Maintaining the battery is important for a long life. Check for any leakage around the battery. It should be kept fully charged and the electrolyte level should be at the top mark.

Winter storage

Here are some tips for storing your beloved bike for its winter hibernation:

  • Change the oil - Change the oil directly prior to storage. Dirty oil has contaminants that can stick to the parts of the engine.
  • Carburetor - Drain the fuel in the float bowls. Any fuel left in the carburetor will become stale and will stick to the inner parts, which will require major disassembly and cleaning in the spring.
  • Battery - Remove the battery for the winter and place in a warm place. Frequently charge the battery on a charger.
  • Fuel - Fill the tank to prevent condensation and add a fuel stabilizer.
